At Louis Freeman, DDS we love when our patients ask us questions about their oral health. It gives us a chance to share our knowledge and it can go a long way in improving a patients oral health! One of the main questions we get is whether or not the foods we eat actually affect oral health or not. While we often associate the food we eat with our physical health, they do in fact have an impact on oral health — no matter how often you brush and floss.

Rather than list all the foods you shouldn’t eat, we thought it would be helpful to talk about the types of foods that are best for your teeth. With the weekly Skokie Farmer’s Market ending on November 11, now is the perfect time to get out there and stock up on the following healthy foods:

Kale & Spinach

These leafy greens are a tough sell for kids, but they do contain a high amount of calcium which helps build and strengthen the hard outer layer of the tooth that protects against tooth decay — known as “tooth enamel.” Folic acid in Kale and spinach can also help in the prevention and treatment of gum disease.

Broccoli

Did you know that broccoli is considered a “superfood”? This doesn’t mean that it can help you fight crime, rather it has so many good qualities that it stands in its own category. When it comes to tooth health, broccoli has a lot of Vitamin C which boost whiteness and improves overall oral health. Another benefit broccoli offers is it’s cleaning power. In fact, just the action of eating raw broccoli has shown to help break apart plaque, which can lessen your risk of gum disease.

Carrots

Carrots are high in keratin, which can help reduce and remove plaque from teeth. Also, much like broccoli, chewing carrots massages the gums and removes plaque. Carrots have also shown to help strengthen tooth enamel thanks to a high dosage of Vitamin A.

Cranberries

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, you should know that cranberries are actually very good for your teeth. Studies have shown that cranberries contain a compound that can stop bacteria from clinging to the teeth, preventing the formation of plaque on the tooth’s surface.

Celery

While celery does not have any nutritional qualities that help improve oral health, it does help clean your teeth — much like a toothbrush. Celery also helps produce saliva, which can help neutralize bacteria and prevent cavities/gum disease.
